CAREER CONVERSATIONS: communicating your value at work

Your relationship with your direct manager is the relationship that makes or breaks your ability to advance at work. If you are wondering how to advocate for yourself in 1:1 conversations with your manager to effectively understand and communicate your value at work, this program is for you!

In this program, you’ll:

1.       Reflect on your value at work, discover a full-proof way to validate your reflection, and walk away with a tangible list of activities and an “elevator pitch” you can use to speak up for yourself at work

2.       Learn how to communicate your value for career fulfillment AND maximum contribution to your organization by aligning your short-term goals with business goals and setting boundaries

3.       Discover practical strategies to handle a “no” in a self-advocacy conversation, so you show up as a leader in the moments that matter most and respond professionally to objections. 

This program can be taken as a course by individuals and has also been run as a 3-part workshop series for women’s groups within organizations. It includes both learning and practice applying what you learned in live virtual breakouts.

The volume of written communication has exploded post-pandemic, requiring a higher level of writing ability than required when in-person was the norm. Consulting professional-service engineers face a special challenge due to their client-facing roles. For them, effective written communication can include the ability to inform, persuade, and even mitigate conflict in writing. Written business communication is the primary communication tool by which clients are judging technical competence, and for many engineers is a struggle to do quickly and effectively.

It’s an even bigger challenge for engineering managers, as they try to monitor and markup emails, reports, and other written communication going out of the office. Managers are spending more time than ever correcting writing fundamentals, which is not what they signed up for when they became an engineering manager.

While managers are typically the individuals that enroll their staff in our business writing program, it’s the students that tell us “I can’t believe you made writing fun!” and “I didn’t just learn how to write better, I feel like I’m a better communicator from taking this program.”
